Nostalgia old and new: Private feeling and political emotion

You are very much welcome to OI (Organizing Integration)-research group next research seminar where our guest will be Professor Emeritus Yiannis Gabriel, from University of Bath.

Topic: Nostalgia old and new: Private feeling and political emotion
In the last twenty years, nostalgia mutated from a rather marginal and disdained emotion to one that has played a significant role in political and social developments.
This is especially the case with the resurgence of populism fuelled by desires for a return to a past ostensibly better than the present, as evidenced by slogans like Trump's "Make America Great Again" and the Brexit campaign's "Get Back Control".

Drawing on insight on nostalgia from different fields, including psychology, politics and organization studies, this presentation will examine the links of nostalgia with identity both as a group phenomenon and as an individual experience. I will argue that nostalgia aims to maintain a sense of continuity in the face of discontinuity and disruption, at the individual, group, organizational and national levels.

It is an emotion that can strengthen communal bonds but can also assume aggressive forms against "othered" social groups that are cast in the role of wreckers or disruptors.
Within organizations, nostalgia can support employee resistance against modernizing forces, but can also be appropriated by modernizing management regimes to legitimize changes ostensibly aimed at restoring desirable qualities of the past.

The presentation will conclude by proposing that nostalgia can be viewed as an anchor to the past, one that stops identities from drifting or being overwhelmed or wrecked by a changing world.
At the same time, nostalgia can turn into a toxic and aggressive emotion leading to scapegoating, stereotyping and xenophobia.
