Abstract: Researchers and professionals working in specialised domains nowadays need to publish their work in scientific conferences and journals and face the challenge of publishing in English to increase the outreach and impact of their activities. Although English is the de facto lingua franca for scientific research (Bennett, 2013, 2014, 2015), very few researchers are native speakers of English. This leads to a considerable disadvantage, especially for those who do not master English as a foreign language. The disadvantage touches on the cognitive level (Breuer, 2015), as well as on the career level, if journal acceptance is taken into consideration (Benfield and Feak, 2006), and on the economic level, if cost of additional translators or proofreaders is factored in (Lillis and Curry, 2010). Using MT as a writing aid might ease some of these disadvantages by (1) allowing people first to write in their L1 and then use MT as an aid to produce text in English, thereby tackling some of the cognitive demands of writing in a foreign language and (2) reducing costs by eliminating the need for translators or proofreaders, who often do not possess the specialised domain vocabulary in any case (Willey and Tanimoto, 2015).

In my talk I will explain the work I'm currently doing to explore the potential of Machine Translation as a writing aid for English as a foreign language writers. I will report on the results we obtained in two different experiments and discuss the future avenues of research based on those results.
