This talk is about three dimensional documentation techniques and artificial intelligence approaches to automatically recognize motifs in rock art documentation, research, and dissemination.
Three dimensional documentation techniques and Artificial Intelligence approaches to automatically recognize motifs are in the process of revolutionizing rock art documentation, research, and dissemination. The Southern Scandinavian rock art is Europe¿s richest pictorial source for the life and believes during the Bronze Age (1800/1700-550 BC). However, most of the at least 20.000 sites are documented only in 2D using older tactile methods.
The project ¿Rock art in three dimensions¿ seeks to push the boundaries of the research front by increasing the amount of 3D documentation of rock art and developing an automatic keywording system for the Swedish Rock Art Research Archive. For this purpose the Department for Historical Studies, the Centre for Digital Humanities, Chalmers, and the County Board for Västra Götaland are collaborating in this project. Three dimensional documentation has several advantages over older documentation techniques which can be used to get better results in the recognition of motifs. The presentation will introduce the project, the advantages of 3D documentation, and using artificial intelligence, but will also begin the discussion of issues and crucial questions that the work also brought to the forth. This is a necessary critical discussion of the proper place of interpretation, of the human ability to perceive 3D, and of Computer Vision¿s issues to cope with human creativity to advance the integration of digital methods into rock art research.
